How to Manage Psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a type of recurring autoimmune disease. People dealing with this disease have red, flaky patches on the skin. Though it is a type of skin disorder, it may begin with an ill-functioning of the immune system in the body.

When the protecting T-cells of the body mistakenly become active and start performing other immune responses, it can cause psoriasis symptoms.

There are many ways in which one can manage the symptoms of Psoriasis. In this article, we present you with some of the common ways to manage Psoriasis.

So, let’s start!

Ways to Manage Psoriasis

Maintain a Balanced and Healthy Diet

We all know that our body gets energy from what we eat and drink. Nothing is better than eating healthy and nutritious food. Healthy food plays a great role in our overall well being. This is also true in the case of Psoriasis.

There are many foods that can help in easing the symptoms of Psoriasis from inside the body. Including nuts and seeds, omega-3 fatty acids will help reduce the inflammation. Add turmeric to your food as it minimizes psoriasis flare-ups. Also, one should eliminate saturated fats, red meat, carbohydrates, and refined sugar if dealing with Psoriasis.

According to the National Psoriasis Foundation, including fish oil, milk thistle, primrose oil,  Oregon grape, and aloe vera in the diet will help in reducing psoriasis symptoms.

However, we always advise you to consult an experienced skin specialist to ensure that these foods will not interfere with other functions of the body.

Hydrate Your Skin

Hydrating your skin is as important as hydrating your body. People suffering from Psoriasis should moisturize the skin and the affected part to prevent the forming of plaques. One should also use a humidifier in houses and offices to keep the air moist. This will also help reduce the chances of dry skin.

One may also massage with Olive oil on the affected part that helps in soothing the skin and reduce plaques.

Get Some Sunlight

According to Marian T. McEvoy, MD, a professor of dermatology at the Mayo Clinic, UV rays play a vital role in controlling psoriasis. The UV rays can control the triggered cells that cause Psoriasis. So, this light therapy or exposure to sunlight is helpful for limiting the symptoms of  Psoriasis.

However, too much light is not good for Psoriasis too. This is why we always recommend you to have this light therapy under the supervision of an expert dermatologist.

Quit Harmful Substances

We all know that harmful substances like alcohol and cigarettes are not good for health. Both alcohol and cigarettes can act as a trigger for Psoriasis in the body. According to the study published in the American Journal of Medicine in 2007, heavy smoking increases the chances of developing Psoriasis but the symptoms of Psoriasis can be reduced after quitting smoking. Another study found that regular consumption of alcohol worsens the Psoriasis condition and lowers the treatment response.

Hence, for people dealing with Psoriasis, we suggest to stop or quit alcohol and smoking now.

Exercise

Regular exercise will help in keeping your body healthy. It maintains the proper functioning of the body and reduces the risk of several problems. For managing Psoriasis, one should follow moderate to intense exercise five times a week. It is one of the best ways to manage the flaky patches.

Performing exercises daily may also delay or prevent the chances of getting Psoriasis.
